Waterproof Gaitors

Description: Kerrits Equestrian Apparel's Griptek Gaitors are half chaps designed to stand up to the elements. The insulated, water-repellent Griptek fabric provides warmth and breathability, as well as gripping power. A full side zipper with an adjustable closure allows you to customize the fit. Machine washable, the gaitors come in all black or black with tan piping.

The test: Longtime horsewoman and The Trail Rider contributor Heidi Nyland tested the half chaps while working with a riding student. "I followed the company's sizing directions and ordered a size small to fit my young rider," says Nyland. "The half chaps arrived quickly and looked great. The black, rubberlike fabric is smooth and nicely mimics the look of elegant tall field boots. The inner lining is fleecy and comfortable. The plastic zipper is strong and completely covered by a fabric flap, creating a smooth look.

"The small size proved a bit snug when fitted over typical paddock boots. However, once the zipper was closed, the chaps felt comfortable. A line of elastic made the chaps fit close to the leg without pinching. The fabric stretched and gave to make the fit, but a second pair of hands was helpful, at first.

"In the saddle, my student reported that her legs felt secure. Her lower leg was steady, and she said the half chap's gripping fabric held her leg against the saddle.

"However, during the first ride, the fabric made a high-pitched sound as my student posted, even though her leg wasn't visibly active. Fortunately, the noise lessened on the second test ride and was almost undetectable by the fourth half-hour riding session.

"On the trail, the half chaps guarded my student's lower legs from brush and debris, and repelled water well."

Cost: $79.
