Dear Logan,
I have a 9-year-old gelding who I have been in the box with and have tracked some steers and calves on him, but he hasn’t been trained yet. He is tracking pretty good, except sometimes he runs right past them. What do you think I should do?

Thanks,
Ryan, Senoia, Ga.

Dear Ryan,
Get some slower steers or calves and try to make him rate off. Make him stay there for a jump or two, then rope and stop. Breakaway roping might work well, too. That’s how I would teach one to rate. If I’ve got a horse that wants to be strong and not pay attention to the steer, that’s what I do. You could even just pen rope to get that horse paying attention to cattle.

Sincerely,
Logan Olson
