If you end up with a
broken horse rein despite your best efforts, dismount and lead your horse back to the
barn. Then use this easy fix until you can buy new horse reins. You’ll need: Leather
punch or awl; zip-tie, tack screw, or six-inch piece of thin leather latigo. (If
the latigo is too thick, use a sharp knife to thin it down.)
Step 1. Remove the
rein from the bit.
Step 2. With the
leather punch or awl, punch a small hole in the end of the small, detached rein
piece.
Step 3.
Punch a
matching hole in the end of the longer, remaining rein piece.
Step 4.
Overlap the
ends, aligning the two holes.
Step
5. Tightly screw the two pieces together, or lace a latigo through the two holes
and secure with square knot, or secure with a zip-tie.
