1. Making history: RodeoHouston’s first two
Super Series in the books COLORADO
SPRINGS, Colo. – Two defending RodeoHouston champions kept alive their hopes of
a repeat title during weekend action as the rodeo’s second Super Series came to
an end. Bobby Mote, the reigning and two-time world champion bareback rider
whose $56,833 won in Houston last year paved the way for his 2007 world title,
and tie-down roper Houston Hutto, who led the Crusher Rentals PRCA World
Standings for most of the 2007 regular-season after his Houston victory, are
among eight contestants in each event (eight teams in team roping) to have
advanced to RodeoHouston’s semifinal round.
In RodeoHouston, 10 contestants (10 teams in
team roping) compete in five separate, three-performance Super Series rodeos.
The top four money winners (20 total) in each event in the five Super Series
rodeos will advance to a two-performance semifinal round, where previous scores
and times will be zeroed out.
Mote, of Culver, Ore., and Reigning World
Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Taos Muncy, of Corona, N.M., joined 10 reigning or
past champions who advanced after Super Series I, March 3-5.
Trevor Brazile of Decatur, Texas, the reigning
and five-time world champion all-around cowboy, highlighted Super Series I as
the only cowboy to advance to the semifinals in both team roping and tie-down
roping. Meanwhile, Reigning World Champion Team Roper (Heading) Chad Masters of
Stephenville, Texas, is RodeoHouston’s top money-earner thus far (with partner
Jade Corkill of Fallon, Nev.) after a $9,950 haul in Super Series I.
“It was very hard to catch up with the guys who
won a lot here last year,” Masters said. “It took me all year.” Masters and the other semifinalists are in position to do
quite a bit better if they can advance to the championship round on March 22,
where the winners will share the $55,000 first-place check – the other six
events pay $50,000 to the champion. Steer
wrestler Jason Miller of Lance Creek, Wyo., and team roper (heeling) Walt
Woodard, both reigning champions in their respective events, also advanced out
of Super Series I, as did past world champions Kelly Timberman of Mills, Wyo.
(bareback riding, 2004); Clay Tryan of Billings, Mont. (team roping – heading,
2005); Patrick Smith of Midland, Texas (team roping – heeling, 2005); Ryan
Jarrett of Summerville, Ga. (all-around cowboy, 2005); Mary Burger of Pauls
Valley, Okla. (barrel racing, 2006); and Sherry Cervi of Marana, Ariz. (barrel
racing, 1995 and 1999).
Bareback riding’s first four semifinalists featured, in
addition to Timberman, the last three Resistol Rookies of the Year – Justin
McDaniel of Porum, Okla. (2005); Steven Dent of Mullen, Neb. (2006); and Tilden
Hooper of Carthage, Texas (2007).
While
world champions highlighted those who advanced from Super Series I, the pool of
contestants that emerged from Super Series II, for the most part, features a
group ready to break out in 2008. Cowboys you might hear from later include:
bareback rider Kaycee Feild of Elk Ridge, Utah (the son of five-time world
champion and ProRodeo Hall of Famer Lewis Feild); steer wrestlers Dane Hanna of
Littleton, Colo., and Troy Orr of Lebanon, Tenn.; tie-down roper Blake Huckabee
of Shreveport, La.; and bull riders Cole Echols of Frierson, La., and Seth
Glause of Rock Springs, Wyo.

Rodeo Austin gears for championship
weekend COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Rodeo Austin (Texas), the sixth
stop on the 2008 Wrangler ProRodeo Tour, reached the halfway mark over the
weekend and steams into the final week of competition in the Travis County Expo
Center. Performances continue daily at 7 p.m. (CT), culminating with the final
round on March 15.
First-and second-round action continues from Texas’
capital city. Through March 8, each event’s leaders were: bareback rider Dusty
LaValley of Crooked Creek, Alberta, 170 points on two head; steer wrestler
Stockton Graves of Newkirk, Okla., 7.6 seconds on two head; team ropers Coleman
Proctor of Miami, Okla./Jake Long of Alva, Okla., 10.0 seconds on two head;
saddle bronc rider Cody Wright of Milford, Utah, 168 points on two head;
tie-down roper Jerrad Hofstetter of Portales, N.M., 17.7 seconds on two head;
bull rider Cody Hancock of Taylor, Ariz., 165 points on two head; and barrel
racer Jeanne Anderson of White City, Kan., 29.00 seconds on two runs.
In
addition to Saturday’s final round, the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo will end
festivities earlier in the day with the 2008 Youth Auction, which will take
place for the first time in the newly constructed Long Center for the Performing
Arts. The Auction is the grand finale to the junior livestock show.
2. Despite twister, show to go on in Lake
City COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Florida Gateway Pro Rodeo
in Lake City, Fla., the site of Friday’s tornado that left one dead, damaged or
destroyed 60 homes and 10 businesses and left a trail of devastation 2 miles
long, will go on as scheduled this weekend.
That’s according to committee chairman Mike Nelson, whose
city has been slammed by two twisters in a span of 15 months.
“Friday was just a little wild around here,” Nelson said.
“We’re still on for the rodeo. From where our arena is, the tornado came down
about a mile and a half away and went straight across, west to east. It left a
100-foot swath of destruction. But we’re OK.”
Lake
City, located about halfway between Tallahassee and Jacksonville at the junction
of Interstates 10 and 75, is home to nearly 12,000 people. The Florida Gateway
Pro Rodeo features three performances from March 14-16.
“Some
people talk about bull riders staying on for 8 seconds, and how long that must
feel,” Nelson said. “We had about 35 seconds of hell.”

4. Rodeo News and Notes Lowe wins in Montgomery. For the second weekend in a row, three-time World
Champion Bareback Rider Will Lowe claimed a winner’s check, this time at the
Southeastern Exposition Livestock Show in Montgomery, Ala. Lowe, of Canyon,
Texas, scored 83 points on Stace Smith Pro Rodeos’ Black Mesa and collected a
check worth $2,451.
Last week, Lowe won the title in Glen Rose,
Texas. Other champions in Montgomery
were: steer wrestler Ross Lowry of Summerville, Ga., 8.6 seconds on two head,
$2,037; team ropers Miles Kobold of Big Horn, Wyo./Brandon Bates of Escondido,
Calif., 11.8 seconds on two head, $1,597 each; saddle bronc rider Josh Reynolds
of Corvallis, Mont., 84 points on Korkow Rodeo’s Lights Out, $2,651; tie-down
ropers Steven Catalani of San Antonio, Texas, and Jerrad Hofstetter of Portales,
N.M., 18.2 seconds on two head, $2,410 each; bull rider Trent Cormier of Houma,
La., 87 points on Smith, Harper and Morgan’s Bullet Proof, $7,058; and barrel
racer Brenda Mays of Terrebonne, Ore., 15.59 seconds, $2,223.
Green reclaims Timed Event title. Daniel Green of Oakdale, Calif., reclaimed his title of
rodeo “Ironman” and broke the arena record in the process as he won the
24th annual Wrangler Timed Event Championship, March 7-9 at the Lazy
E Arena in Guthrie, Okla.
Green
posted a total time of 276.1 seconds on 25 head in all five timed events to win
his second Timed Event title and checks worth $57,000.
Trevor
Brazile, who won his record fifth Guthrie title last year, finished second and,
along the way, set the event’s record for fastest round (44.6 seconds) and
earned $41,000, pushing his career event earnings to more than
$500,000.
The
Wrangler Timed Event Championship was developed in 1985 to determine the best
all-around timed-event cowboy in the world – someone who could shine in not only
his specialty, but in all five timed events.
Houston attendance record broken. The RodeoHouston performance on March 9, featuring Hannah
Montana and Miley Cyrus in concert, was witnessed by 73,459 fans, breaking the
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s all-time paid rodeo attendance
record.
It broke the previous record of 73,291, set in
2007 with a performance by Cyrus as Hannah Montana and the Cheetah
Girls.
