1. Quest for gold: Brazile, Allen to battle it out for coveted steer roping world crown
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Last year, when Trevor Brazile arrived at the Lea County Event Center in Hobbs, N.M., he was more than $17,000 ahead of the second-ranked steer roper and cruised to his first single-event world title after a stellar performance at the National Finals Steer Roping.

The four-time and reigning World Champion All-Around Cowboy finished the season with more than $87,000 in steer roping earnings and won the gold buckle after finishing second in six out of seven years from 1998-2004. His dominance was clear throughout the 2006 season, which culminated with him at the top of the heap.

This year, however, won’t be as easy.

After all, who is nipping at Brazile’s heels but 18-time world champion steer roper and ProRodeo Hall of Famer Guy Allen, widely considered the best steer roper of all-time. Brazile will have his work cut out for him at the NFSR this year, Nov. 2-3, with “The Legend” just $1,900 behind his Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings leading total of $42,453.

Considering that five of Brazile’s six career runner-up finishes in the steer roping world championship race have come at the hands of Allen, this year’s NFSR should be an entertaining one.

Allen knows all about close races. In 2005, he lost out on his 19th world title by $1.67 to Scott Snedecor, who enters this year’s NFSR ranked seventh in the world standings. Allen, of Santa Anna, Texas, finished fourth in the final standings last year and is excited about being back in the hunt for yet another world title.

Plemons, of Chilton, Texas, enters this year’s NFSR ranked third behind Allen and Brazile with $34,154 in earnings. Brazile, Allen and J.P. Wickett each won $18,750 at last year’s NFSR, so Plemons and a host of other talented ropers are within striking distance.

When people hear the name Rich Skelton, they most assuredly think of the elite team roping heeler winning a record eight straight world titles with Speed Williams from 1997-2004. Now, they can think of him as an NFSR qualifier.

The 41-year-old from Llano, Texas, will be making his first appearance at the NFSR after qualifying in the 11th spot with $23,460 in earnings.

There have been a number of steer ropers who have found success this season, many of whom could give Brazile and Allen a run for their money at the Lea County Event Center. Wickett, of Sallisaw, Okla., who finished second to Brazile in the world standings last year, enters the event fourth in the standings, with 2002 World Champion Steer Roper Buster Record in sixth and 2006 NFSR Average Champion Justin Olson 13th, just to name a few.

Whether Brazile is able to pull off back-to-back titles, Allen is able to extend his PRCA record for world championships or another roper claims his first gold buckle remains to be seen, but the 10 rounds of this year’s NFSR should be exciting from start to finish.

2. Asay, Schmucher capture titles in Indy
INDIANAPOLIS (Special) – With a simple glance at the results from the Indianapolis edition of the Dodge Xtreme Bulls Tour presented by B&W Trailer Hitches, there were no surprises.

Kanin Asay, who led the Xtreme Bulls standings the latter half of the year, went ahead to win the year-end title. Meanwhile, B.J. Schumacher, the reigning World Champion Bull Rider and defending Indianapolis Xtreme Bulls champ, won the event.

But what the results sheet didn’t show was the exciting and dramatic fashion in which these two somewhat predictable outcomes unfolded.

The Pepsi Coliseum on the Indiana State Fairgrounds teemed with FFA students. For the second consecutive year, the Xtreme Bulls Finale was held in conjunction with the high school agriculture program's national convention.

In the first round, Ardie Maier scored 88 points on J Bar J's Dark Side, while Schumacher nipped at his heels with an 87 aboard Frontier's Peep Show. Asay scored an 81.5 while Chance Smart – the only other cowboy with a chance at the Xtreme year-end title, posted an 83.

In the second round, Asay set the bar with an 88 on Three Hills's Square Tongue.

Schumacher, who won the average, would be the last bull rider to go in the finals, preceded by Asay.

Pandora's Box, drawn by Asay, seemed too tough. He ejected Mike Moore in the first round with an incredibly strong first move. Asay, however, was unfazed and cranked out a 90-point ride.

In sum, Asay won more than $15,000 in Indianapolis, bringing his Xtreme Bulls unofficial total to $72,126 – half of his total earnings for the year.

With the year-end title sewn up, Asay would win the event title too if Schumacher scored an 85.5 or less. Schumacher, who led the Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings coming in to Indy, wasn't about to let that slip away. Besides, Indianapolis has been good to him. He won last year's edition there it catapulted him to the world title.

He rode Biloxi Blues for 87 points and took home $17,898 – boosting his overall world standings total to $152,753.

4. Rodeo News and Notes
Fields, Herrin highlight Prairie champs. Steer wrestler Ronnie Fields claimed his event’s average title at the Dodge Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo, presented by U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co., last weekend in Kansas City, Kan., giving him a chance at keeping the national title in Oklahoma.

Fields, of Oklahoma City, downed four steers in 15.5 seconds in front of the Kemper Arena crowd, good for the average title and an automatic berth to the 2008 Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Pocatello, Idaho. Last year, fellow Prairie Circuit bulldogger Stockton Graves of Newkirk, Okla., walked away with the national title.

Year-end winners in each of the PRCA’s 12 circuits, as well as the average winners at each circuit finals rodeo, earn a DNCFR berth. The top 24 contestants in each event battle it out at the DNCFR for the title of national champion.

Tie-down roper Hunter Herrin, who made his Wrangler National Finals Rodeo debut in 2006, punched his ticket to Pocatello last weekend. Herrin, of Apache, Okla., roped and tied four calves in 34.2 seconds to win the title.

Other average champions from the Dodge Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo were: bareback rider Dustin Murray of Midwest City, Okla., 317 points on four head; team ropers Nick Sartain of Yukon, Okla./Shannon Frascht of Alva, Okla., 21.9 seconds on four head; saddle bronc rider Cort Scheer of Elsmere, Neb., 321 points on four head; bull rider Poncho Limas of Weatherford, Okla., 89 points; and barrel racer June Holeman of Arcadia, Neb., 52.37 seconds on four runs.

Wrangler NFR media credentials. Media personnel interested in covering the 49th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Dec. 6-15 in Las Vegas, must have a completed credentials application form sent to the PRCA by Nov. 15.
