Showdown in Indy: Asay, Smart make Dodge Xtreme Bulls title chase a two-man race COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – No one night will be bigger for the Dodge Xtreme Bulls than Oct. 26, when the Dodge Xtreme Bulls Tour presented by B&W Trailer Hitches wraps up its 10-event run in Indianapolis. It’s the Dodge Xtreme Bulls Championship at the Pepsi Coliseum, sponsored by Academic Financial Services, featuring 40 of the PRCA’s best bull riders matching wits with top bucking bulls to determine the 2007 series champion. Just don’t expect to find a bitter rivalry between the two contenders for this year’s title. Kanin Asay and Chance Smart have become fast friends during what have been breakout seasons for the two talented young bull riders, and while they will battle for the title in Indianapolis on Oct. 26, they won’t be rooting against each other. Asay, of Powell, Wyo., leads the Dodge Xtreme Bulls Tour standings with $56,865 heading into the two-performance finale, with Smart, of Philadelphia, Miss., his nearest competitor at $46,877. With the potential of winning nearly $18,000 and Wesley Silcox a distant third with $30,520 in earnings, it is a two-horse race for this year’s championship. The 21-year-old Asay, ranked second in the world, and 23-year-old Smart, who ranks fourth, said they would still be happy if the other one ended up winning the title. “I’ve done some traveling with him, and he’s a wonderful, wonderful guy and an outstanding bull rider,” Asay said of Smart. “If he was to win it, I’d be just as happy for him as if I had won it. We’re just going to go and do our best to ride bulls and have fun doing it.” Smart couldn’t agree more. “We’ve gotten to be really good friends, so whoever wins it, it will be great,” Smart said. “It is really cool how it’s all worked out because we’ve become really good friends, traveled together and are the top two going into the Xtreme Bulls finals. I’d be tickled to death if he won it, but it’s not going to make me slack up any.” None of the other 40 bull riders who gather at the Pepsi Coliseum will slack off either, and they can’t afford to. Some of the PRCA’s top stock contractors will take their rankest bulls to Indianapolis, giving the contestants top-quality stock to test their skills against in hopes of high scores and a big payday. Asay and Smart headline the field that’s also highlighted by reigning World Champion Bull Rider B.J. Schumacher of Hillsboro, Wis., and reigning Xtreme Bulls National Champion Zeb Lanham of Sweet, Idaho. Mike Moore of Kankakee, Ill., who won the first Xtreme Bulls title in 2003, also is among the contestants. Schumacher was Xtreme Bulls’ top money-earner in 2004. Previous Xtreme Bulls Tour stop champions for 2007 are Cody Hancock of Taylor, Ariz., Rapid City, S.D. (Jan. 26-27) and Okeechobee, Fla. (March 10); Luke Haught of Weatherford, Texas, San Antonio (Feb. 1); B.J. Schumacher of Hillsboro, Wis., San Antonio (Feb. 17); Chance Smart of Philadelphia, Miss., Houston (March 18); Zack Oakes of Tonasket, Wash., Laughlin, Nev. (April 14-15); Wesley Silcox of Payson, Utah, Reno, Nev. (June 14); and Kanin Asay of Powell, Wyo., Cody, Wyo. (June 30); and Silcox, Ellensburg, Wash. (Sept. 1). Action gets under way with the first performance at 5 p.m. ET, followed by the second round at 9 p.m. and a final round immediately following. All 40 riders will compete in both rounds, with the top 12 cowboys returning for the final round Earnings from Xtreme Bulls count toward the world standings, which determines qualifiers for the Wrangler NFR, Dec. 6-15 in Las Vegas. In Indianapolis, each rider is competing for part of the $75,000 purse. ESPN2 and ESPN will broadcast the action from Indianapolis. ESPN2 will air highlights from Indianapolis on Nov. 11 at 2:30 p.m. ET, with ESPN delivering an encore presentation on Nov. 28 at 2:30 p.m. ET.
2. Kansas City plays host to Prairie Circuit finals COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Qualification for the 2008 Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo continues this weekend with the Dodge Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo, Oct. 24-27 at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Mo. It’s the third of 12 circuit finals rodeos that will ultimately send the country’s top riders and ropers to the DNCFR. Action from the four-round rodeo starts each day at 7 p.m. Three Prairie Circuit cowboys earned top honors at the 2007 DNCFR after team ropers Colt Braden and Jake Long captured the DNCFR championship, while Cooper Kangiesser claimed the bull riding crown. At the 2007 DNCFR, the stakes to win were even higher than in past years. Event winners not only received a one-year lease to a new Dodge pick-up truck, but also received an automatic berth in the first two Ariat Playoff Series rodeos in Caldwell, Idaho, and Puyallup, Wash. There, the DNCFR winners had a chance at some big paychecks and, if things went well, an opportunity to advance further into the Playoff Series. Year-end winners in each of the PRCA’s 12 circuits, as well as the average winners at each circuit finals rodeo, earn a berth to the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo, held each March in Pocatello, Idaho. The top 24 contestants in each event battle it out at the DNCFR for the title of national champion. At the 2007 DNCFR, steer wrestler Greg Bennett achieved his dream of winning a big rodeo. The former school teacher from Lake Luzerne, N.Y., who’d taken some time off teaching to spend more time competing in rodeo, won the national title with a 4.2-second run in the Wrangler Round. Other national champions were bareback rider Wes Stevenson; saddle bronc rider Anthony Bello, tie-down roper Cutter Parsons and barrel racer Shali Lord. The PRCA circuit system was created in 1975 to recognize competitors who might never have a chance to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The circuit cowboys and cowgirls compete throughout the year in a designated circuit (usually near their home), and top competitors from each circuit qualify for their circuit’s finals. 3.
