A small herd of wild horses on North Carolina’s Outer Banks may be competing
for space with tourists.
The Corolla Wild Horse Fund plans to commission a study on the herd’s affect
on wild marshes and grasses to determine the correct number of horses the area
can sustain, according to the Associated Press.
The fund and the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge agreed in 1999 to limit
the herd to about 60 horses. The herd currently numbers 101.
Like most of the U.S. herds, the horses at Corolla are thought to be
descended from Spanish settlers. Tourist visits and souvenir sales pay for the
herd’s maintenance.
