The Oklahoma state legislature is considering a bill that would allow equine
dentists that are not veterinarians to continue to practice.
A new Oklahoma law took effect last November. It stated that equine dentists
either had to be licensed veterinarians or work under the auspices of a vet to
practice. An amendment to the bill would change the oversight for equine
dentists from the Board of Veterinary Examiners to the Agriculture, Food and
Forestry Department.
At issue is whether non-veterinarian equine dentists can administer
sedatives. The amendment was filed on April 8, according to The Oklahoman
newspaper.
Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association saddle bronc rider and four-time
Wrangler NFR qualifier Bobby Griswold, who practices equine dentistry on the
side and earned his certificate in 2000, was the first person arrested and
charged with this crime in a sting operation.
