The Associated Press reported last week that about two dozen horses due to arrive in Hong Kong by plane on August 6 for the Olympic equestrian competition had to wait in Amsterdam until a severe tropical storm had passed.
The American show jumping team horses were among the 14 horses waiting at the quarantine facility.
Severe tropical storm Kammuri was about 81 miles (130 kilometers) south-southwest of Hong Kong late Wednesday morning, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to the territory, shutting offices, courts and financial markets.
The wet weather also closed outdoor training facilities for the competition.
BBC Sports reported that the British team, which is in Hong Kong’s neighboring island of Macau, had been affected by the storm.
They were not allowed outside and all public transportation had been suspended until the typhoon passed.
Weather forecasters predicted at the time that ceremonies and other festivities might be a bit soggy but that the worst of the storm will have passed by the time the equestrian events get underway.
