Slim Pickens for Oklahoma State, Wild Horses

Madeline Pickens, wife of gazillionaire T. Boone Pickens, rescinded her $5 million donation to Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine because the school uses live animals for research.

Not only that, but her dream of opening a wild horse sanctuary has been all but quashed. Private donations for the sanctuary have dried up. Pickens’ request that the feds pay her $15 million a year to take care of the animals was not um, wildly popular. First, the BLM agency, which relies on annual appropriations from Congress, has no authority to commit to payments to Pickens, writes the Washington Post. Second, Pickens’ preferred spot for the sanctuary isn’t available for private use.

Pickens blames the bureaucracy and a lack of creative thinking for her stalled plan. Government officials say they were under the impression she would provide funding for the program.
