Pulitzer Winner Turns to Horses, Again
image fpo
Jane Smiley, Pulitzer Prize recipient and author of “Horse Heaven” and “A Year at the Races” has released a young adult novel geared toward horse-loving girls.

In the story, “The Georges and the Jewels,”12-year-old Abby Lovitt’s father buys and sells horses, and Abby is his helper, riding and caring for the "Georges" and the "Jewels" — what he insists she calls the geldings and mares so she won't get too attached to them. Along the way, Abby deals with her home and school life and learns to express herself.

Smiley will write two additional Abby stories, with the next one, “A Good Horse,” due out in September 2010.
