Broadway Kevin is the Newark, N.J. Police Department’s newest recruit. The
horse, a former harness horse, went from killers’ auction to rescue group and
finally to a new career: As a police horse, according to a Fox News report.
Thoroughbreds and standardbreds are uniquely suited for police work, because
they’re smart, they’re used to crowds and they learn quickly, the adoption
manager at the Standardbred Retirement Foundation in Hamilton, N.J. told Fox
News.
The news isn’t so good for Boston’s crime-fighting equines.
Those twelve equine cops will be laid off as of July, thanks to budget cuts.
Camden, N.J. will also lose its mounted force.
Boston’s police chief
says the move to disband the mounted unit has been very unpopular, but it will
save the force about $700,000 a year.
The horses will go to New York and to
several other departments around the Northeast. If Boston’s finances improve,
the horses will return, reports Boston.com.
