It
was not meant to be: Zara Phillips, granddaughter of the Queen of
England and daughter of Princess
Anne, scrapped plans to compete in the Beijing Olympics last week when her
mount, Toytown, developed a soft tissue injury.
Princess
Anne rode for Britain in the1976 Montreal Olympics.
Toytown and Zara Phillips, hoped to follow in her mother's footsteps. The pair
won the 2006 World Equestrian Games Individial Gold Medal in Aachen, Germany and are considered the
reigning world champions. According to the London Daily Mail, Phillips is hoping
to develop a young horse in time for the London Olympics in four years. She
recently rode the Queen's mare, Tiger Lily IX, at the Burgie International Horse
Trials in Scotland as a trial run. Tiger Lily
will need to move up three grades to be in the reckoning for the Olympics and
was in fifth place after dressage and cross country events
yesterday.
In
the U.S., the United States Eventing
Association announced it had added two riders to the eventing team short list:
Clark Montgomery and Jennifer Wooten.
In
dressage, the top 12 riders vied for a spot in on the team in Selection Trials
to be held in San Juan
Capistrano, Calif. in
mid-June.
