Horses Are a Gift
February 5, 2010
by Cindy Foley

As a young adult, out on my own finances for the first time, I wondered why anyone would want a horse and not ride it. Who wants to do all that work and not ride? Plus, it was a financial stretch to have a horse back then, but it was worth the struggles.

Now, as a middle aged adult, with all of life’s many pressures, I still love to ride, but I totally get why someone would want a “backyard ornament,” as they’re sometimes called.  As I juggle worries about my husband’s health and simply life in general, I’ve found that the few hours a day I can spend in the barn each day are a lifesaver for me.

Sally’s warm coat and caring eyes give me such a mental lift, as she nuzzles me in a way that says, “Don’t worry so much, Mom. Everything’s going to be just fine.” When she sticks her head over the stall wall, with oats and mash and mush dribbling out all over the floor, her face reflecting complete self-indulgence and total satisfaction, I often laugh out loud. It’s absolutely comical, but it reminds me that indeed, life is good, and that no matter what else goes wrong I’m very lucky to have what I have.

My Papillons lift my spirits with their high energy and determination to do what I ask for as best as they can, and I love our training sessions. Fluffy the barn cat never fails to lift my spirits. His favorite game is to jump out from behind a stall door, bat me on the legs really fast a couple of times—without using his claws—and then take off running to the loft as fast as he can.

But it’s the horses that give me something to steady myself.  I cannot imagine life without Sally and, even if someday I can no longer ride, I plan to still have a “backyard ornament” to help me get through the rough times. The horse has an amazing ability to calm, to heal and to cause you to appreciate the little things in life. The truly important things. Horses are a lifeline for me, surely a gift to all of mankind.

Yes, they certainly are gifts and I can't agree with you more. I have 5 ornaments, each with their own personalities and they keep my "sanity" everyday.

Hello, I to can understand. My husband has had a horse for about 8 years now and it is just a pet to him. He does have someonw ride him, but the horse (Blu) is definetly a pet and he knows it. He is aware when my husband drives up to the barn, and he waits til he hears the truck door close and he then makes noises as if to say hello. He makes my husband feel great. So yes, by all means enjoy the animals.

Cindy - I have two lawn ornaments that have kept me sane these past years. No matter how bad I day I have, there are two beings out there that nicker when I come out to feed them and are genuinely happy to see me. When something that big trusts you, life ain't so bad.

Very, very well said. I agree so much with this. Being in the barn is my stress relief!

I couln't agree more! I have MS and can't imagne fighting the fatigue and depression without my 2 girls. I get up at the same time every day because I know there is a kiss waiting before feed time. Seriously! She stands at the gate with her nose over the edge as we exchange affection. She seems to know the days I'm not up to going out and the days we do she takes care of me. We almost have more fun on the off days just because we just love to hang out together grooming or playing or going for a grazing walk. At 56 I know I will have her all of HER life, I just would love to have her all of MY life! She IS my therapy!

Yep, Cindy, I have 3 lawn ornaments, all old-timers. Each one has given us years of wonderful experiences, and it's great to see them enjoying their retirement. Silver, my daughter's pony, has become my time keeper. She lets me know with a big whinny if I haven't started feeding on time.

I completely agree with all the blogs. I have 5 yard horses that I used to ride but due to a very busy schedule around the property these guys just hang out with me. I miss riding but it seems to be elusing me these days. I could not imagine my life without my animals.

Cindy, my ornament is a VERY geriatric (31 next week) Arab mare who was headed for a large cat farm to be fed to them, having outlived her usefulness. She was thirty when I got her. I finally managed to get her in in the barn she was born in, and every day with her is the best day ever for me. She is cranky, sometimes feeble, often a bit lame due to an old abscess that requires daily treatment to keep at bay, and has developed the odd habit of just hauling off and biting people (but not me) for no good reason. She is shaggy and often stinky, but I would rather spend one day grooming her and singing to her (she bumps you if you quit, in spite of being almost completely deaf) than I would having all the money in the world to spend on anything else. She is generally happy, neighs only for apples, still leaps through the air and gallops, does flying lead changes and rollbacks at liberty in the arena at times, and follows me as I do my chores with a patience and affection that is impossible to ever replace. When I have to say goodbye I will probably go get another old horse, and keep spending the money at the vet, grooming the stringy hairy body, brushing out and conditioning the tail, working on all the nasty things that develop, and just enjoying their wisdom and quiet dignity as long as I am able. I am writing a book about her now that will be published upon her demise, as a fitting memorial to who she is and was to so many people.
